Thailand's largest island has long been a gateway to the Andaman Sea, and it wears that role well. Longtail boats bob in turquoise coves beneath towering limestone cliffs, their engines the loudest sound for miles. Patong's neon-lit streets pulse late into the night with music, markets, and Muay Thai stadiums, while a short drive away, Karon and Kata beaches offer a quieter, slower version of island life. Inland, Phuket Old Town reveals another layer entirely — pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, incense-filled Chinese temples, and family-run cafés serving recipes passed down through generations of Hokkien and Peranakan heritage. Beyond the island itself, the surrounding Andaman Sea holds some of Thailand's most iconic scenery: the towering karsts of Phang Nga Bay, the postcard beaches of the Phi Phi Islands, the crystal-clear snorkeling coves of Similan. Phuket has grown into a major international destination, but its identity remains distinctly Thai — spicy street food, roadside spirit houses, and a warmth in its people that no amount of tourism development seems to dull.
